Specialised in the production of solid wood furniture, Nikari is a significant Finnish company that combines high craftsmanship, contemporary design, and sustainability. Founded in 1967 by Kari Virtanen, the workshop is renowned for creating high-quality wooden furniture for both public and residential spaces. Each piece is crafted in Finland using certified wood from Northern Europe and low-impact manufacturing processes. Since 1993, Nikari has been based in Fiskars, a village west of Helsinki known for its artisanal heritage. The company operates in a former 1837 machinery workshop, located by the Fiskars River, whose rapids power the hydroelectric plant supplying renewable energy to the studio. In this unique environment, surrounded by ancient forests and rich biodiversity, Nikari has developed a production process deeply connected to the natural landscape and to local collaboration with artisans and cabinetmakers.

Solid wood furniture Nikari: Nordic tradition and contemporary design

Nikari's design language is defined by a balance between formal purity and respect for the raw material. The clean lines and functional minimalism reflect a strong Scandinavian influence, combined with the desire to highlight the unique characteristics of each wood species. This approach is expressed in ever-evolving collections, the result of collaborations with international designers, including Cecilie Manz, author of the Separat screen, the first piece of Finnish furniture to receive the EU Ecolabel in 2021. Nikari’s identity is rooted in Nordic woodworking tradition. Early collaborations with figures like Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck guided the company's focus toward a design that enhances the intrinsic qualities of wood. Today, Nikari’s master cabinetmakers continue this legacy, transforming living material into objects of aesthetic and functional value. Every joint and every surface treated with natural oils reflects the silent dialogue between craftsman and material.

Sustainable production and certified materials

Sustainability is a fundamental principle of Nikari's operations. All products are made from solid wood sourced from responsibly managed FSC® or PEFC-certified forests. Materials, from adhesives to surface finishes, are selected for their environmental compatibility. The workshop uses only renewable energy and promotes reuse and resale of furniture through dedicated platforms. Longevity is ensured through design solutions such as using metal screws to attach upholstery, making it easily replaceable. In addition to minimising its environmental impact, Nikari adopts a production model inspired by the circular economy. Each piece is designed to last and, if necessary, to be repaired, reused, or recycled. The company periodically calculates its emissions to monitor and improve processes, achieving one of the lowest carbon footprints in the wood furniture sector. Looking to the future, Nikari continues to explore new ways of combining environmental ethics, design quality, and artisanal expertise in every piece of furniture.
