Sapiens is an Italian company specializing in the production of
wood cladding for interiors and exteriors, decorative surfaces, and material solutions for contemporary architecture. Founded on twenty years of experience in the finishes sector, the company develops collections that bring together aesthetic research, technological innovation, and a strong focus on environmental sustainability. Wood is the core of the Sapiens identity: a natural material transformed through advanced processes involving fire, water, and temperature, with the aim of enhancing its technical and expressive qualities. The company’s approach is based on continuous research into innovative materials and high-performance treatments designed to offer architects and designers durable, customizable surfaces aligned with the needs of contemporary architecture.
Wood cladding by Sapiens: technology, sustainability, and advanced surfaces
Sapiens production stands out for a range of
wood claddings developed through proprietary technologies and low-environmental-impact processes. The Ardes, Thermo Wood, and Accoya® collections represent three different approaches to wood treatment, united by the goal of improving durability, stability, and resistance to atmospheric agents. The
Ardes collection stems from the evolution of the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, reinterpreted by Sapiens through the Fireskin treatment. The wood surface undergoes an intense and homogeneous burning process that deeply marks the wood fiber, enhancing its material quality and improving its resistance. Through the HI-TECH technology developed by the company, the carbonization is subsequently stabilized using nanotechnologies that prevent the release of surface residues and allow the application of decorative pigmentations. This process gives rise to the ARDES HI-TECH collections, available in the Plank, Aurea, Mosaic, and System 3D lines, designed for indoor and outdoor architectural claddings.
The
Thermo Wood line is instead based on the THW treatment of ash, subjected to temperatures above 200°C in dedicated kilns. The process modifies the physical and chemical properties of the material, making it stable, durable, and resistant to fungal agents without the use of chemical substances. The result is a homogeneous surface with a silky touch, distinguished by natural brown tones that enhance the grain of the wood.
Accoya® is one of the most advanced solutions in the Sapiens range. Through the acetylation process, wood molecules are modified using pure acetic anhydride, increasing dimensional stability and durability up to Class 1. The material ensures high performance even in direct contact with the ground, as well as significant resistance to biological and climatic agents. The line also stands out for its focus on sustainability: raw materials come from certified reforestation sources and the entire production cycle is oriented toward reducing environmental impact. Alongside wood surfaces, Sapiens also develops the
TABULA collection, a line of indoor decorative panels made from the recovery of exhausted paper pulp. Based on patented Honext® technology, TABULA transforms a material that can no longer be recycled into certified, non-toxic, emission-free, carbon-negative circular panels. The collection includes decorative surfaces customizable through milling, water-based painting, and digital printing, as well as the TABULA SONUS acoustic line, designed for sound control in professional and contract spaces.
Sapiens between material culture and bespoke design
The identity of Sapiens develops around a profound culture of material and a design vision that combines craftsmanship and innovation. The company interprets wood as a living element, to be transformed through advanced technological processes without compromising its authenticity and natural value. Sustainability is one of the central aspects of its production philosophy: all processes are developed with water-based cycles and with the goal of reducing the carbon footprint of materials throughout their entire life cycle. Customization is another distinctive element of the brand. The
Sapiens Design line was created to develop bespoke complements and surfaces capable of responding to the specific needs of architects, interior designers, and planners. Through customized workmanship, special finishes, and material combinations, the company creates solutions for both residential architecture and the contract sector, maintaining a constant balance between technical functionality and aesthetic expression.
