Serien.lighting is a German company, based near Frankfurt am Main, that produces lighting fixtures that stand out for their technology and design. The brand collaborates with designers and clients, always looking for new solutions and contemporary forms for its products. Founded four decades ago by designers, then students, Manfred Wolf and Jean-Marc da Costa, the company has since become synonymous with quality design, technical expertise and innovation. Serien.lighting combines the innovative design of its products with a high standard of technology and craftsmanship to ensure formally advanced, durable lighting fixtures, even in the case of custom-designed solutions. In fact, in addition to standard collections of lamps for homes, offices, stores and commercial spaces, the company boasts a number of custom solutions with special one-off pieces, for sacred buildings, libraries or hotels. In March 2024, the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main will host a retrospective exhibition on the company's serien.lighting journey. The title of the exhibition IN SERIEN encapsulates the concept that led to the creation of the company and later gave its name to the brand itself and that is to distinguish itself from the one-off production that prevailed in the 1980s with formally reduced mass-produced products, new technologies and a contemporary aesthetic.

The design of serien.lighting luminaires

serien.lighting products are used by architects and designers who want lighting solutions characterized by minimalist and sophisticated design in their projects. The designs are deepened until the combination of form and function is perfect. The latest LED technology combined with a wide range of control options and along with high efficiency are the company's priorities. Among the flagship collections is the Zoom chandelier, made of stainless steel and featuring a pantograph structure that allows it to change its diameter, much like the zoom of a camera, from which it takes its name. A Red Dot Award winner, this lamp is also available in more extended versions with two or three concentric structures. REFLEX², on the other hand, is a collection of lamps, designed by one of the company's two founders, Jean-Marc da Costa, an evolution of the classic Reflex model. Declined in floor, table, ceiling and wall versions, it consists of a frame structure, minimal and refined, which houses the LED light sources. CAVITY is one of serien.lighting's newest collections, design by da Costa & Wolf, the brand's founders. Characterized by a curved aluminum lighting body that seems to suck the light source inward, the lamp is available in ceiling, pendant or semi-recessed and wall-mounted versions. The final effect is that of soft, glare-free lighting. The DRUM series has a cylindrical shape with a linear design, particularly suitable for contract or office environments. The outer glass cylinder contrasts with the cone-shaped opaque inner reflector and, depending on the size, creates an effective balance of geometries. In addition to the collections designed by the duo Costa & Wolf, the company collaborates with external designers, such as Yaacov Kaufman, Uwe Fischer, Hopf & Wortmann, Formfjord and Next Space.

serien.lighting: passion for light

The company serien.lighting has been a landmark on the international lighting design scene for almost 40 years. The two founders, Manfred Wolf and Jean-Marc da Costa, were already united by their passion for light during their design studies at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach. Their backgrounds complemented each other perfectly: Costa's father was an architect, and Wolf's grandfather and his parents manufactured metal accessories for Offenbach's once-thriving leather goods industry. The two young entrepreneurs were therefore able to use the old machines and equipment in the workshop, to create their first lighting visions. Metal was immediately the most commonly used material, but ceramics, textiles and, in some cases, hand-blown glass were also used. The brand's name, serien.lighting, was born out of a desire to explore formally reduced objects based on a contemporary aesthetic that, thanks to new technologies, made use of mass production to stand out from the expressive one-off pieces of the 1980s. Over the years, the focus remains on the development, design and production of high-quality, long-lasting fixtures with a sophisticated lighting effect. Great emphasis is placed on relationships with regional suppliers, hand assembly, high-quality materials and components, and conservation of resources.
